Farsley Celtic secured their spot in the Integro Sport Cup final after securing a 3-1 win over a hard-working Belper Town side, writes Mark Rawlinson.
Goals from Luke Parkin, Jimmy Spencer and Ben Atkinson in horrendous weather conditions as Storm Gareth battered Throstle Nest, set up a final meeting with Trafford, who defeated Buxton in tonight’s other semi-final.
The Celts had plenty of early chances in the game but couldn’t make any pay until the 28th minute as the ball was played through to Parkin, who held his nerve against Seb Malkowski to slot home the opener.
Belper’s hopes took a dent on 43 minutes as they were reduced to 10 men after Craig Nelthorpe was rightly dismissed for an extremely dangerous challenge on Chris Atkinson. The midfielder was forced off with injury, with stud marks left above and below his knee.
However the visitors capitalised on Farsley’s recent habit of conceding just after half time. Target-man Danny South was able to fire home an equaliser from a corner on 48 minutes.
The Celts were unlucky not to retake the lead on 54 minutes as the ball fell to substitute Cartman but his effort clipped the post.
But they did make it 2-1 two minutes later as Paul Walker was quick out of the traps with a counter attack. He found Jimmy Spencer who was at his clinical best as he fired past Malkowski.
The goalkeeper went onto produce a brilliant save on 68 minutes as he reacted sensationally to tip Ben Atkinson’s effort over the bar after he’d received the ball from Luke Parkin.
Opposite number Kyle Trenerry, who had been feeling under-the-weather all game, then produced two outstanding saves, as he twice denied former Celt Jordan Deacey with two snapshots from close range.
Belper were then unlucky not to equalise in stoppage time, when an effort was cleared off the line but Farsley once again broke quickly against the wind, and after both Spencer and Ben Atkinson had been denied, the Celts were then awarded a penalty for a foul inside 12 yards.
Ben Atkinson stepped up and slammed the penalty into the left corner to rubber-stamp the victory.
Farsley Celtic: Trenerry, Boateng, Baldwin, C Atkinson (Cartman 45), Higgins, Clayton, Hayhurst, B Atkinson, Spencer, Parkin (Mitchell 82), Walker.
