Report: Farsley Celtic 0-5 Southport
- MENS TEAM NEWS
- 5 October 2019
Farsley Celtic crashed out of the FA Cup after being handed a 5-0 defeat at home by Southport, writes Ed McIntyre.
After an even opening fifteen minutes, the match sprung into life after 18 minutes when Ben Atkinson put the ball into the back of his own net to give Southport the lead.
The rest of the opening half was end to end with both sides having their chances. The visitors failed to make their dominance in the air pay off, whilst Farsley had been reduced to half chances as the game finished the half with the visitors a goal to the good.
Despite Farsley’s change of system at half-time, it was the visitors who took their chances in an open second half and dominated the game. Goals from Jack Simpson and Russell Benjamin gave the visitors the upper hand.
Celtic kept chasing the game and that led to further goals from Devarn Green and substitute Connor Woods to give the visitors a deserved victory, as they made it three FA competition victories in three seasons at the Citadel.
Jimmy Spencer almost scored a consolation goal for the Celts with one of the last kicks of the game, but it was Southport who eased into the 4th Qualifying round.
After the game, Farsley Manager Adam Lakeland told us: “Obviously I’m incredibly disappointed. They were stronger than us in every department. It resembled the game last season.
“The lads are disappointed. We’re far better than that. They (Southport) were too devastating on the break, they were very ruthless with their finishing and deservedly won the tie in the end.
I’m not going to criticize the players, they’ve been incredible. We’ve got great togetherness and we’ll bounce back. The disappointing fact is that we’ve got to wait two weeks for a game – it’s incredibly frustrating but it is what it is. We’ll regroup, reflect on today and we’ve got to get ready to go again against Alfreton.”
Farsley Celtic are next in action on Saturday 19th October 2019, as they travel to Alfreton for game number 13 of their National League North campaign.Match information
