Report: AFC Telford United 0-2 Farsley Celtic

It was a case of a game of two halves, as Farsley notched up their first league win in seven attempts, with a 2-0 win at AFC Telford United, writes Rob Winterbottom.

The hosts dominated for the majority of the first half but couldn’t convert their many shots into a goal.

In the second 45, Farsley looked much more of a threat and they wrapped up the win thanks to a goal from Akeel Francis and Will Hayhurst’s deflected cross for the second.

The closest Telford came to scoring in the entire match came on seven minutes, as striker Marcus Dinanga’s header hit the crossbar.

It was pretty much one-way traffic for the entire half but dogged defending and some fantastic last-ditch tackles from Jack Higgins, Danny Ellis and Chris Atkinson stopped firstly Dinanga and then James McQuilkin getting a clear sight of Kyle Trenerry’s goal.

The Celts looked far more dangerous after the break, and the deadlock was broken two minutes before the hour mark, when Jordan Richards swung in a cross and Francis turned the ball past the goalkeeper.

And Farsley’s first Vanarama National League North win since October 19 was confirmed six minutes from time, as Hayhurst’s low cross was turned into his own goal by Theo Streete for 2-0.

There were unsavoury scenes at the final whistle after Telford captain Ellis Deeney, brother of Watford’s Troy Deeney, kicked the ball at Hayhurst after the whistle had been sounded. A fracas broke out where the incident happened which led to two players from each side being cautioned, including Deeney receiving his second yellow of the game as he was sent off.
