Report: Eccleshill United 1-1 Farsley Celtic

Farsley Celtic returned to action for the first time since March as preparations for the 2020/21 campaign kicked off with a 1-1 draw against Eccleshill United.

This game also marked the return of fans to sporting events, and those in attendance at the Mitton Group Stadium were rewarded with an entertaining spectacle.

Eccleshill, whose pre-season got underway at the start of the month, opened the scoring through Dominic Staunton before Tom Allan’s second-half header ensured the game ended all level.

In truth, the Celt Army created more than enough chances to win the game, but an inspired performance from the Eagles’ ‘keeper Brad Emmerson helped the hosts to a draw.

The first clear opening of the game came Farsley’s way, as Will Hayhurst delivered an inch-perfect cross for Jimmy Spencer only for the striker to guide his header wide.

However, after chances at both ends, it was the hosts who opened the scoring as Staunton drilled a strike into the bottom-right corner from the edge of the box.

It took Farsley until the 70th minute to draw level with Tom Allan playing an integral role in the equaliser from start to finish.

The centre-half’s fierce long-range strike produced a fine save from Emmerson, and it was from the resulting corner where he rose up to power home Hayhurst’s delivery.

Adam Lakeland’s side had a number of opportunities to win the game in the final 15 minutes as Jordan Richards hit the post and Tyler Walton was denied superbly by Emmerson.

Yet the biggest chance came after more good work from Walton as the midfielder fired in a cross for Ben Atkinson, who was unable to direct his effort on target at the back post.

Eccleshill were unable to trouble the Farsley defence after Allan had levelled, however, the NCEL side proved to be a stern test to begin pre-season and will be delighted with their effort in securing a draw.

Farsley are back in action on Tuesday evening with a trip to Golcar United.
