Farsley Celtic suffered their first defeat of pre-season as Bamber Bridge ran out 1-0 winners at the Sir Tom Finney Stadium.
Preparations for this match were less than ideal, with Farsley originally due to play Ashton United and Bamber Bridge due to play Ashton Athletic; but with both fixtures cancelled, this game was arranged at short notice on Saturday morning.
Once the football got underway, Adam Lakeland’s side were left to rue a glut of missed chances as Danny Forbes converted the hosts’ only shot on target to provide the only goal of the game.
Farsley were on the front foot from the start, and the first real opening came 10 minutes in after a terrific move started by Jake Maltby, which resulted in Dave Syers’ curling effort being tipped over by Danny Roccia.
Bamber Bridge attempted to play out from the back and were caught out on numerous occasions in the first-half, Jimmy Spencer almost making them pay as he twisted and turned in the box before firing over.
The visiting Celts continued to create openings on a regular basis with Spencer, Jake Charles and Ben Atkinson all having opportunities to open the scoring in a five-minute spell.
However, it was the hosts who broke the deadlock to stun Farsley, capitalising on an error in the middle of the park to send Danny Forbes through on goal and the forward made no mistake.
Despite the goal, the game continued in a similar vein with Farsley dominating possession and applying pressure to Bridge’s backline.
And the Celt Army thought parity had been restored after the break when Tom Allan powered home a header, only for the referee to adjudge that a foul had been committed in the process.
The lively Charles then came close twice in a minute, his initial effort being blocked inside the six-yard box before he then had a strike superbly saved by Roccia.
From the resulting corner, Roccia failed to claim the delivery, and the ball dropped to Adam Clayton eight-yards out who saw his strike blocked on the line.
That seemed to sum up Farsley’s afternoon in front of goal, as they were unable to capitalise on their dominance, and it was ultimately Bamber Bridge who prevailed in this pre-season encounter.
