Ashley Smith-Brown Signs for the Celts

Farsley Celtic are delighted to announce the signing of full-back Ashley Smith-Brown.

The 24-year-old spent the best part of two decades at Manchester City, before leaving for Plymouth Argyle in 2018 where he plied his trade until January this year.

Whilst at City, the Manchester-born defender spent time on loan at NAC Breda, Hearts and Oxford United, and also represented England up to under-20 level.

Smith-Brown told FarsleyCeltic.co.uk: “Speaking with the manager made the decision fairly straightforward in regards to signing with the club. We had spoken on a few occasions over the last week, and from the conversations we had, I felt like Farsley was the best place for me to play my football.

“It’s been a tough few months for everyone. Even the players that have had clubs there has been a lot of uncertainty going on, and it’s been a bit stop-start. I’m glad that the season’s underway now, and I’m looking forward to getting on the pitch.”

The former Citizen featured as a trialist in last weekend’s friendly with Huddersfield Town B, and got 90 minutes under his belt.

He continued: “The game last Saturday was good in a sense as I was able to familiarise myself with the lads and how they play, which will be a help. The only disappointing thing about the game was the result.

“I didn’t know any of the lads before I signed, but from the minute I walked in they’ve all been friendly and they have made it really easy to settle in.”

Smith-Brown also explained what Farsley fans can expect from him, as he said: “I’m a defender who can play right or left-back, and can also play holding midfield. I like to get on the ball and to support the attacks as much as possible, getting a lot of crosses in.

“My aim for this season is to help the team finish as high as possible. I’ve seen how well they’ve done over the past few seasons and last year they were in and around the playoffs, so hopefully this season we can push on and finish higher.”

Farsley Manager Adam Lakeland added: “Ash has been in with us all week and has shown the undoubted qualities he has within the short time he has been with us.

“He is very strong with both feet which gives us competition for places in the wing-back and full-back areas, as well as in the middle of the pitch and in the wide centre-back positions.

“Despite only carrying a small squad, we have strong competition but I felt we needed more depth for the defensive positions to give players currently occupying those shirts more competition.

“Ash needs to improve his fitness, something which he understands, and if we can get him somewhere near his best then we will have a very capable player on our hands and I’m looking forward to working with him.”

Smith-Brown will be available for selection for tomorrow’s trip to AFC Fylde.

Everyone at Farsley would like to wish Ash a warm welcome to the club!
