Report: Thackley AFC 0-4 Farsley Celtic
By James O’Reilly
Farsley Celtic continued their stellar start to the pre-season, coming away from Dennyfield with a comprehensive 4-0 victory over Thackley AFC.
Adam Barton would open the scoring for the Celts, shortly followed by a Kris Hargreaves own goal which gave Farsley a 2-0 lead at the break. The second half would see Jimmy Spencer and Will Hayhurst net a goal each, adding the finishing touches to a very impressive Farsley performance.
Hoping to learn from their early wobble at Eccleshill in the prior game, Farsley looked to keep possession in the opening stages of the game, a theme that became apparent throughout the match.
Celtic had a couple of half-chances in the first ten minutes, most notably Barton’s headed effort from a corner, but neither side could really carve out a chance.
The deadlock was broken in the 14th minute. Farsley won a free-kick on the left, which was taken by Joel Byrom, and the ball found the head of Adam Clayton in the Thackley box. The defender nodded the ball back across the penalty box and found the head of Adam Barton, who couldn’t miss the open goal that faced him.
Farsley started as they meant to go on. Their pressure was relentless and it would pay off for them once more before the break. In the 25th minute, Sam Walker found Will Hayhurst with a brilliant ball forward. The left-back’s cross didn’t seem overly threatening, but that didn’t prevent Thackley defender Kris Hargreaves from muddling the ball into his own goal, doubling Farsley’s lead.
However, the remainder of the first half was broken up by injury stoppages for both teams. In the 33rd minute, Tyler Walton was floored by a reckless Thackley challenge and was forced off the field, with manager Adam Lakeland noting that “the game lost its spark” for his side in the first half after Walton was substituted.
In the second half, it was more of the same from the Celts, aggressively containing Thackley to the confines of their own half. In the 57th minute, Hayhurst delivered a corner that found Barton in the air. The ball found its way to Jimmy Spencer, who added a third for Farsley.
The final goal came through a Hayhurst penalty, striking the ball into the bottom left corner following a foul on Ollie Broe in the 68th minute.
Hayhurst had a chance to make it 5-0 with his second penalty of the game mere minutes later, but saw it well saved by Thackley goalkeeper Luke Wilson.
Another dominant victory added to the impressive display at Eccleshill, as the Celts look towards their third friendly against Scunthorpe United at home this Saturday.
